Swire Properties partners with Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai

As Principal Patron the Company continues its tradition of supporting world-class arts and cultural institutions and events

Swire Properties is pleased to announce a partnership with the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP), the newly-established public art museum designed by renowned French architect and Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel. The 40,000-square-metre MAP, developed by Shanghai Lujiazui Group, is set to become a new cultural landmark on the prominent historic waterfront of Pudong.

Supported by Swire Properties as Principal Patron, MAP opens to the public today with exhibitions by Tate Britain, Chinese fireworks artist Cai Guoqiang and Spain's Fundació Joan Miró.

Tate Britain will offer professional guidance to help MAP become a world-class museum, holding exhibitions there over the next three years. The first exhibition, "Light: Works from Tate's Collection", will run until 14 November and will display more than 100 pieces, including renowned works such as Claude Monet's "The Seine at Port-Villez," John Martin's "The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum" and Sir John Everett Millais' "Ophelia", one of the Tate's best-loved paintings. It will also feature contemporary interventions by artists such as Dan Flavin, James Turrell, Anish Kapoor, Tacita Dean, Olafur Eliasson, Bridget Riley and Yayoi Kusama.

Chinese fireworks artist Cai Guoqiang will stage "Cai Guo-Qiang: Odyssey and Homecoming" in celebration of the museum's opening. A highlight will be "Sleepwalking in the Forbidden City," a contemporary artwork combining art installations and virtual reality technology. Another opening exhibition at MAP is "Joan Miró. Women, Birds, Stars", the first show offered by the Fundació Joan Miró in China and the most important in Asia since 2014.

"In accordance with our commitment to placemaking, we strive to create public spaces where arts, culture and creativity can thrive," said Tim Blackburn, Chief Executive Officer, Chinese mainland, Swire Properties. "We are very pleased to have this opportunity to be Principal Patron of this important new museum in Shanghai. This partnership demonstrates the strength of our relationship with Shanghai Lujiazui Group and our shared ambition to bring exciting world-class art and culture to the people of Shanghai, one of the world's great cities."

Xu Erjin, General Manager of Shanghai Lujiazui Group, the museum's investor and operator, said: "We are delighted with this partnership with Swire Properties. MAP was the last piece of the jigsaw of Lujiazui's core waterfront area and aims to become a world-class museum, in aesthetic taste and level of exhibitions, specialising in international cultural exchanges."

In September, Swire Properties and Lujiazui Group will open Taikoo Li Qiantan in the heart of the Qiantan International Business District. Also known as "The New Bund", this area is set to become one of the city's landmarks for arts and culture, entertainment, business, residential, sports and leisure. The new 120,000 sqm Taikoo Li Qiantan, a retail development, is the third Taikoo Li project in the Chinese mainland. It continues to embrace the low density, lane-driven, high quality public realm brand ethos, and promotes the concepts of Wellness and "Heart of Urban Living" in Shanghai.
