The second Cathay Young Explorers Programme takes students on an inspiring cultural and aviation study tour

Supporting the next generation of aviation enthusiasts through an immersive week-long tour from Urumqi to Xi’an

Cathay’s commitment to supporting youth development was on full display last week as it celebrated the second edition of the Cathay Young Explorers Programme, held from 5 to 11 April 2026. Supported by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the programme saw 30 students from Hong Kong embark on an immersive study tour from Urumqi to Xi’an in the Chinese Mainland. The participants explored the rich culture of the Silk Road — a historic link between East and West — while gaining valuable insights into the development of China’s civil aviation industry.

A collaborative platform for youth development

Jointly launched by Cathay and the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, the programme is a flagship initiative under the Cathay Aviation Dream Youth Development Fund. Following its successful launch in Xinjiang and Sichuan in 2025, this year’s programme, themed “Youth in Motion: Discovering the Silk Road”, offered participants a week-long educational journey through Urumqi, Yining and Xi’an.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Chinese Mainland, Corporate Affairs & Marketing Communications Carol Sun said: “As Cathay celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, we are pleased to continue our partnership with the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation through the Cathay Young Explorers Programme. This initiative provides young people with the opportunity to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of aviation, and foster stronger cultural identity and national pride through mutual learning. With our unique position of having deep roots in Hong Kong, being proudly part of China and connecting the world, Cathay remains firmly committed to promoting youth development and nurturing aviation talent with both a global vision and an innovative spirit.”

Principal Assistant Secretary (Quality Assurance) of the Education Bureau Joyce Yip said: “All along, the Education Bureau has been encouraging youngsters to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of our country’s development. The Cathay Young Explorers Programme has provided valuable learning opportunities for students since its launch. We appreciate the efforts of Cathay and various organisations in promoting youth exchange, which complement the Education Bureau’s Chinese Mainland exchange programmes and create synergies that support youth growth through exploration.”

Exploring aviation and cultural heritage

In Xinjiang, students visited the Control Centre of Xinjiang Airport Group where they were able to learn about aviation operations and Urumqi’s role as a major regional hub. They also experienced the region’s vibrant cultural and natural environment through visits to Sayram Lake, Kuerdening Scenic Area, and the Kazanqi and Liuxing Street cultural and residential districts.

In Shaanxi, the programme included visits to the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, Shaanxi History Museum, along with the Western Airport Museum. Students also toured the Northwestern Polytechnical University, gaining valuable insights into aerospace development.

Chan, a student representative, said: “From ancient dreams of flight to today’s aviation advancements of our nation, I have developed a deeper appreciation for discovery and exploration. I will carry these experiences forward in my studies and hope to contribute to the development of our nation’s aviation industry in the future.”

Supporting youth development

Cathay is committed to fostering youth development and sparking young people’s interest in aviation. Through initiatives such as the Cathay Young Explorers Programme, the Group provides opportunities for young people to gain a comprehensive understanding of the aviation industry and explore future career pathways.

In celebration of its 80th anniversary, Cathay is launching an expanded range of community initiatives built around youth development, sports, and arts and culture. Cathay’s flagship youth development initiative, I Can Fly, will continue to offer aviation-themed learning experiences centred on Education, Discovery and Exploration, supporting young people in pursuing their aspirations.
