Cathay Pacific Releases June Traffic Figures

Cathay Pacific Airways today released traffic figures for June 2002 which show continued growth in cargo volumes alongside a more marginal increase in passenger numbers. The airline carried 1,009,264 passengers in June this year, an increase of 1% over the same month in 2001, and 68,477 tonnes of cargo - an increase of 20.4%.

Cumulative figures for the first six months of the year show that cargo traffic increased by 13.5% over last year, while the number of passengers carried rose by 0.7%. The passenger load factor for June was 77.9%, up 2.9 percentage points on the same month last year, with positive traffic growth on Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern routes.

The volume of cargo and mail carried, measured in cargo tonne kilometres, increased by 15.7%, while the cargo load factor for June was 73.9% - up 6.6 percentage points on last year.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Cargo Kenny Tang said: "Cargo traffic continues to surge, driven by strong demand to and from North America. We've been particularly encouraged by a recent strengthening in cargo yields."

General Manager Revenue Management, Sales & Distribution Ian Shiu said: "The growth in passenger traffic has been marginal, particularly in First and Business Class, and yields remain soft, which is impacting on our revenue situation. Overall, demand on long-haul routes has been stronger than on short-haul sectors."
